  16. While both their titles include "style", Strunk and White's classic
  17. _Elements of Style_ deals solely with style in the narrow sense, while
  18. the AGPS (Australian Government Printing Service) _Style Manual_ is
  19. a style manual in the technical sense and covers a much wider range
  20. of material.

  22. _The Elements of Style_ is deservedly a classic, and I would like to
  23. be able to recommend it as compulsory reading for all school students.
  24. Unfortunately it is not suitable as such because it assumes a prior
  25. knowledge of basic grammar - at least the difference between nouns
  26. and adjectives, if not the meaning of "gerund" or "appositive".
  27. It gives advice on grammar, word choice, appropriate use of different
  28. syntactical constructions and similar topics.  It is liberally
  29. illustrated with examples, with correct and incorrect usage in
  30. parallel, and has a whole section on common mistakes.  Clearly and
  31. entertainingly written, _The Elements of Style_ is recommended to
  32. anyone who is seriously interested in writing English.

  34. While they contain some similar material, technical manuals like the
  35. AGPS _Style Manual_ also contain a lot more: advice on abbreviations,
  36. titles, punctuation, hyphenation and non-discriminatory language is
  37. coupled with information on such a diverse range of topics as editing,
  38. book-binding, typesetting, proofreading, indexing, illustrating
  39. and publishing.  The AGPS manual is surprisingly readable for such
  40. a compendium.  (I actually read it from beginning to end, something I
  41. baulked at doing with the rather larger _Chicago Manual of Style_)
  42. It should be pointed out that much of the material it contains
  43. is specific to Australia, so it would only be the style manual
  44. of choice for those working inside Australia or writing about it.
  45. Obviously anyone involved in the production of books should keep a
  46. style manual handy, but I think most book-lovers would find something 
  47. to interest them therein.
